In endometriosis, deposits of endometrial cells which are normally found within the uterus, are found elsewhere. They may be found on the lining of the pelvis or abdomen, on the Fallopian tubes or ovaries, bowel and even some more distant sites. The most common location for endometriosis is in the pelvis. These deposits, like the endometrial lining inside the uterus, respond to hormones during the menstrual cycle and bleed, resulting in pain and difficulty with fertility.
